Silver Bleeds Black by jessa1155 Silver Bleeds Black by jessa1155
Mark fabricated this men's ring from heavy gauge sterling silver stock. Design features a flush set sapphire cabochon and a hand chiseled slash and cut design. Mark also oxidized the low points of the chiseled areas for added contrast.

Size 9.5 and weighs in at 16grams:)

This ring is just plain COOL:headbang:

The reason for the title "Silver Bleeds Black".

I used die sinking chisels to cut into this ring. When I made it I wanted to test my new tools. Die sinking chisels are like giant engravers. I cut extremely deep into this ring with these new toys. The thought crossed my mind when making this ring that I was going to make the silver bleed. I also had to move the metal a ton to set the sapphire cabochon. One of the more challenging stones to set. I put this ring through hell, and discovered silver bleeds black and bruises blue:)

Its wonderful, i'd totally wear that too, and its rare to see sapphire set in silver here, and that's a stunning sapphire, here in the uk mainstream sapphires are ridiculously dark.. anway its fantastic

Blue on silver is just awesome! I love this technique with no bezel showing. It's like the stone is just sunk in. What kind of stone is it?

Wow! I am terrible at setting stones in bands. You do it beautifully! This piece is stunning (and it's nice to see some men's jewelry).

Did you back set this gem?

I think it's awesome you went to so much trouble to make the design, I just think a wax model and casting would have been MUCH easier on you and your tools ;)

No I did not that's why it was so hard to set it. I had to really push and punish the metal.

I purchased the die sinking chisels so I could make deep cuts into metal. I love having the ability to carve away metal like butter:)

I likes this design.. Very angular with high-contrast--It makes me think of a tribal tattoo!

It's too bad that natural good quality star sapphires are so hard to come by:(

Now that you mention it, that's true. I've seen not much up here either, even when I visit Chinatown. The best ones are a milky blue - no colour contrast to speak of.

A lot of star material gets heat treated to dissolve the needles that cause the star, they then facet it. What a shame:(

Thank you very much for the compliment:) I already know I will have a hard time letting this one go. If it was a star sapphire I don't think I would be able to part with it:)
