This design is the newest version in our series of carved matrix opal spider pendants. The full series is shown in our journal~ [link]

The hand carved Andamooka Rainbow opal spider sits within a pierced Argentium silver web and is held with a hand fabricated prong setting. The blood red chrome pyrope garnet accents contrast beautifully against the black matrix opal spider

This may be a thing that's just incidental to the way the opals reflect light but all the pictures for the Opal Spider series makes the opals look really dusty for some reason. Lovely work on the web. This of course looks better in real life, as do all pieces that are made with opal, more than likely as compared to the picture of it. Compliments to your mother on such a spectacular carving job. It's always a pleasure to see all of the work that the three of you work on.
Andamooka Matrix opal is very different from other opal types. This variety of matrix opal, Andamoooka Rainbow opal, has a porous surface which requires a surface sealant such as Opticon. This opal is completely opaque and it has black and gray specks mixed within the multi-color fire.... perhaps those specks look like dust to your eye?
Thanks for the compliment!:)

Ah. Okay. So overall the stone is fairly flat where it's black and the color are the sparkly points. Hrm. Did not know that.
The gem grade Andamooka matrix takes a beautiful natural polish~ [link] but it's much more expensive and it's difficult to find a chunk large enough to carve a 40 carat opal spider. The rainbow matrix is a great lower priced alternative for larger gem carving projects and it's still gorgeous... especially in person:)

That is really cool!
Ah. I remember that some of the Andamooka matrix opal being really glossy. I was curious as to why some of it wasn't as glossy. Thanks.
