Artist's Comments

This is a custom sterling silver and carnelian pendant. I was asked to combine these carnelian cabs with the feeling of flames and the feel of a Celtic design. The carnelian cabs came out of an old family heirloom.

gorgeous.

& the 'flame' bits... sweat soldering,I presume? <3 yeah, that must have taken some patience. little pieces don't like to stay where you put them.

I agree, those flames must have been a trial to do if they're sweat-soldered (if I'd tried, I'd have a lot of sterling blobs ). The piercework is graceful and gorgeous - a very stunning setting for these stones.

The only thing I'd suggest would be to photograph the piece on a color different than the reddish-pink satin. I think it detracts from the carnelian's reds and makes them look a bit lifeless...which they probably aren't!

So beautiful! Very dramatic with a real sense of movement. A real goddess piece.

Wonderfully modern with an ethnic Thai twist - superb!

I love sweat soldering..... it gets easier with practice. You start to get a sense of what the little pieces of overlay will do when and if they do slide out of place. Filing the middle of the bottoms of the pieces of overlay helps keep them in place and and also seems to make for a cleaner and stronger solder joint.

Good advice... I have to agree that the red was a poor choice! The carnelian weren't all that bright... The cabs came from a client's old family heirloom. I usually prefer to use my own gems but sometimes I take on projects such as this one.

Those projects are always the ones that make me shudder because I'm afraid I'll break a client's stone...:fear:
